Loving Nature -A Teaching Moment

While I was teaching I also taught summer school for a few years. The students were part of a migrant grant from the Federal government. We worked about 4 hours each day and on Fridays we went on field trips to different locations. One of the trips was at a nature center. I was in charge of about 10 third graders who were all Latinos. Near a tree the students were screaming and moving away from something. When I went to look there was a small spider. I picked up the spider and it was in the palm of my hand. All of the children were backing away except for one child came forward. Thinking it is a great teaching moment I held out my hand for the child to see. He quickly slapped my hand killing the spider as he yelled "cockroach". Well, the teaching moment passed!
