Roberto Clemente Walker (August 18, 1934 – December 31, 1972) was a Puerto Rican Major League Baseball right fielder. He was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico, the youngest of seven children. Clemente played his entire 18-year baseball career with the Pirates (1955–72). He was awarded the National League's Most Valuable Player Award in 1966. Clemente was selected to participate in the league's All Star Game on 12 occasions. He won 12 Gold Glove Awards and he led the league in batting average in four different seasons. He was also involved in humanitarian work in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries, often delivering baseball equipment and food to them. He died in an aviation accident on December 31, 1972, while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1973, thus becoming the first Latin American to be selected and the only current Hall of Famer for whom the mandatory five-year waiting period has been waived since the wait was instituted in 1954. Clemente is also the first Hispanic player to win a World Series as a starter (1960), win a league MVP award (1966) and win a World Series MVP award (1971).

Education World: The More Books at Home, The Higher the Child’s Education

My school recently had a visitor (Barbara Dalio) who had expressed an interest in helping our students achieve success. I took Barbara and others on a tour of our school. During the tour I talked about some of the wonderful programs we have developed to support our students. Barbara asked us to write up a proposal about a need for our school. I have always tried to get books into children's hands over my career. I support a Student of the Week which allows me to give a book to each child (about 20 books each week. I also support a 3 Thumbs Up Award (caught being good) which also allows me to give out a book to that child. I also made a connection with Books2Connect which gives each child a book for their birthday. These books are books that go home and become part of the child's home library. Our proposal for Barbara was written by Jenna Masone, Asst Principal and it requested that each child would receive 5 books (3 non-fiction) during this school year. Well, Barbara's foundation (Dalio Foundation) accepted the proposal an awarded us $10,920 to purchase the books. Our hope that this year each child will receive 10 books for their home library. Sumo Wrestling Brookside School May 2011

As part of a reading challenge I agreed to wrestle a mystery wrestler in our gym. The children had to read 16000 books from January to April. They ended up reading 19500 books. This video is part of the 10 minute video. I won the first match against my Asst Principal Dr. Jenna Masone. Jenna pulled out the victory by knocking me down in the next two matches. It was fun but exhausting!
